The PEW report on LGB Americans
2013-07-16
The entire report continuously talks about “LGBT’ this and ‘lgbt’ that.
How many of the 1197 respondents were trans? 43. This is less than 5% of their sample (well, they call it five, but im not sure where they got that no from).
Here is what they write in a footnote:
Transgender is an umbrella term…‘blah blah’…Because of the small sample size (n=43) of transgender respondents in this survey, it is not possible to generate statistically significant finding about the views of this subgroup. However, their survey responses are represented in findings about the full LGBT population.
r u fucking kidding me?
is this an actual fucking joke? how – in any definition of the word – does this count as representation? Like. Okay. This group wasn’t big enough to impact the numbers so we just lumped them in with everyone else.
also. looking at the race breakdown. the majority of respondents are also white. this explains soooo fucking much about the data.
58% say [marriage] should be the top priority even if it takes attention away from other issues
Only 16% had been subject to slurs or jokes in the past year. hahaha. okay. Only 58% have had this happen at some point (this is the least extreme form of oppresison they listed).
Among survey respondents, white are more likely than [poc] to say society is more accepting… [poc] are more likely than whites to say being LGBT is extremely important to their overall ID.
And just as gay men, lesbians, and bisexuals perceive less commonality with trans people than with each other, trans adults may appear not to perceive a great deal of commonality with lgb people
here is my big surprise
u mean to say that contrary to reports, there isn’t an lgbT community?
