the sort of frustrating/amusing thing about most citation styles and how professors invoke them is that they usually require the style they learned and the last time they actually looked at a style guide was when they were an undergrad

this means that almost every single one of them has an out-dated notion of correct citation style (since most style guides update periodically and each update changes the rules in some fashion).

and having edited an academic anthology

i can also tell you that a great deal of professors have terrible citation practices but rely on editors (like I was) to fix it all and clean it up.
