i dream of being possible

50 shades of gay

reading this book about the category ‘transgender’

and my mind is blown over the vast difference of the way that ‘gay’ was used in white communities vs. communities of colour.

Like. Whites construct this category of gay to only refer to cis white gay men (building their movement on the efforts and backs of Black and/or Latina trans and/or gender variant people).

contrast

with ball culture where basically everyone can participate and most of the parcipants call themselve ‘gay’

white gay = exclusive, heavily policed community

poc gay = if you’re here, you’re gay

(not to say that other words weren’t used for greater specificity, but how gay for a period of time in communities of colour was an umbrella term for all kinds of people)

why do whites do this? why are you all so rigid?
